Houston Friends of Music welcomes the highly acclaimed Jupiter String Quartet on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. in Stude Concert Hall at The Alice Pratt building on the Rice University campus, entrance 18 off Rice Blvd. or entrance 8 off University. Parking is located in West Lot 1 near Rice Stadium.
Formed in 2001, the Jupiter String Quartet is an intimate group of musicians consisting of violinists Nelson Lee and Megan Freivogel, violist Liz Freivogel and cellist Daniel McDonough. The quartet chose its name because Jupiter was the most prominent planet in the night sky at the time of its formation and the astrological symbol for Jupiter resembles the number four.
The group makes its Houston debut on the Houston Friends of Music series this season.
“Houston Friends of Music is pleased to present Jupiter String Quartet, recognized as one of the strongest young string quartets in the country, to our 2008-2009 series for its Houston debut,” states Houston Friends of Music Board President Ann Fairbanks.
By 2005, the Jupiter String Quartet had won first prize at the Fishoff and Banff competitions and at the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. In 2007, it won the Cleveland Quartet Award from Chamber Music America and the quartet began its three-year residency with Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society Two. With extensive appearances at major venues throughout the United States, the quartet was just awarded a 2008 Avery Fisher Career Grant.
The program will feature: Haydn: Quartet in F Major, Op. 77, No.2; Shostakovich: Quartet No. 7 in F-sharp Minor, Op.108 ;
S. Gubaidulina: Quartet No. 2 (1987) ; Britten: Quartet No. 2 in C Major, Op. 36.
