It should come as no surprise that the seven-piece Joyfull Noise Brass Band are a loud bunch. Blaring, in fact. The ensemble rumbles into town with a sound instantly recognizable and simultaneously unique. Finding inspiration from such disparate sources as James Brown, Lee Dorsey, Professor Longhair, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Ray Charles, the group fuses these influences into a powerful, rumpled blast of New Orleans horns, drums and feverish vocals.
Kally Price and her band open the program with a mixture of tight swing, sultry jazz and barrelhouse blues from the 1930s and 1940s. Classics by Billie Holliday, Memphis Minnie and Bessie Smith rule the night, but equally impressive are the little known gems. Prices selections are witty and seductive, and sung with a sweet molasses tone that shakes, rumbles and effortlessly wins you over.
