Join KQED's Michael Krasny of Forum in an intimate conversation with Martin Fletcher about his latest book and his 30-year career as a war correspondent in the hot spots of the globe. "Breaking News" offers a vivid account of Fletcher's work and is an intimate personal story of his ambitious and daring adventures in some of the most tumultuous moments in modern history. Tom Brokaw called it "a stunning and memorable account of reporting," and Anderson Cooper described it as a "real life, cross-continent adventure story." Fletcher is currently the NBC News Bureau Chief in Tel Aviv and covers the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from Gaza.
From his base in Tel Aviv, Fletcher has covered a full spectrum of breaking news developments throughout the Middle East and around the world. He has reported on the war on terror in Afghanistan, the conflict in Kosovo, and the aftermath of the Tiananmen Square massacre in China. When NATO and American troops were hunting for General Aidid, the Somali warlord responsible for killing 18 American soldiers in Somalia, Fletcher was the only person to find and interview him for NBC Nightly News. He also became the first correspondent to enter Cambodia with the Khmer Rouge guerrillas.
Fletcher has received five Emmys, an Overseas Press Club Award, the prestigious DuPont Award, and was named Cameraman of the Year by the British Royal Society of Television.
