Johnny Winter is back at Penn’s Peak with Magic Slim & The Teardrops!!
Johnny Winter
A true guitar hero, Johnny has forged the way for legendary guitar players for over 40 years. He is the link between British blues rock and American Southern rock ala The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Since 1969 and his self-titled debut album, he has recorded almost 40 albums of classic rock and blues. Johnny even produced and played on a series of Grammy award winning albums with his idol, Muddy Waters. Gibson Guitars released the signature Johnny Winter Firebird guitar, his beloved trademark for years, in a ceremony with Slash presenting. Johnny, never one to forgo a special appearance, recently performed with The Allman Brothers at the Beacon for their 40th Anniversary special, has been headlining events such as the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the Chicago Blues Festival, Swedish Rock Fest and Europe’s Rockpalast, just to name a few. There is even a release of his smoking classic “Meantown Blues” live from Woodstock. To add to his already large reputation, Johnny recently performed on The David Letterman Show playing some hits from his highly acclaimed 2011 release “Roots.” Performing now with a renewed vigor and fire to say that he is "back" would be an understatement. In fact, he never left. He is just better than ever.
Magic Slim & The Teardrops
You better be ready for Magic Slim and The Teardrops because they are a no frills, in your face Chicago blues band that is going to leave you wanting more! Magic, like most musicians it seems, started out in the church choir and played piano. Unfortunately, or maybe it was fate, he had an accident and lost a finger, which made piano playing very difficult. He soon took up guitar and the rest is history. Slim became friends with Magic Sam, who named him Magic Slim, and hired Slim to play bass in his band in Chicago. Eventually, Slim gained his own attention when he began playing regular gigs at Florence’s on Chicago’s south side in 1972. He then formed his band, The Teardrops, and the crowds went wild. His career took off across the country and across the seas. He even became an instant hero in Brazil when he opened up for Buddy Guy, Etta James and Albert Collins on the first blues festival staged in Brazil. The media felt Slim stole the show and soon he could be found everywhere. Magic Slim & The Teardrops have been nominated for an amazing assortment of awards over the past nine years: Blues Entertainer of the Year, Blues Instrumentalist-Guitar, Traditional Blues Album of the Year, Traditional Blues-Male Artist of the Year and Blues Band of the Year. Blues Blast Magazine’s 2010 Music Awards named Magic Slim the Best Male Blues Artist.
