Guitar master John Williams returns to San Francisco and the Herbst Theater for the first time in four years, bringing a solo guitar recital to SF Performances Sunday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. The program includes works by famed Cuban conductor and composer Leo Brouwer, the great Villa-Lobos, and Williams himself (through selections from his most recent album From a Bird.)
As one of the great guitar interpreters of all time, Williams delves deep into the repertoire, melding genres and traditions. He has recorded African, Asian and Latin American music in addition to western jazz, classical and avant-garde. His SF Performances recital capitalizes on the wealth of his classical material by offering a beautifully complementary mix.
Besides the Brouwer and Villa-Lobos works, Williams will also spotlight the trailblazing style of Cameroon-born Francis Bebey-who was featured on Williams's African-focused album The Magic Box-and the brilliance and vision of Barrios, the Romantic Paraguayan 20th century troubadour.
This concert marks Williams's tenth with SF Performances, with whom he first appeared in 1994. The recital is presented in association with Omni Foundation for the Performing Arts. For tickets and information, call (415) 392-2545 or visit sfperformances.org.
