John Santos is one of the foremost exponents of Afro-Latin music in the world today. He is known for his innovative use of traditional forms and instruments in combination with contemporary music. Santos has performed, recorded and studied with masters such as Cachao, Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Lazaro Ros, Armando Peraza, Eddie Palmieri, Max Roach and more.
Five-time Grammy nominee, John Santos, is a highly respected bandleader, composer, recording artist, producer and educator in the Bay Area since the mid 1970s.
His stellar Sextet is composed of some of the finest, most creative musicians, composers and arrangers in the field and sheds light on the historical and cultural significance of Latin Jazz.
Their repertoire consists of exciting arrangements from Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the US original compositions and arrangements of classics from Latin America and the US.
Their first CD, Papa Mambo, was released on John’s Machete Records label in the Summer of 2007. Their second CD, Perspectiva Fragmentada, was released in October, 2008. Equally at home with a dance or concert repertoire, The John Santos Sextet presents a wide range of styles and rhythms for audiences of all ages.
