China’s leading contemporary dance artist Jin Xing makes her festival debut in The Closest – The Furthest. Beginning with an incense ceremony and cleansing ritual, a lone musician places her traditional Chinese instrument, a seven string GuQin, on the table in the centre of the stage and begins to play as Jin Xing uses her body language to tell the epic story of the instrument's thousand years of history.
The GuQin’s music was used by ancient Chinese emperors as a link between mortals, heavenly forces and earth-grounded strength. Just as these ancient emperors used the instrument’s voice, Jin Xing dances the implicit connection between these elements.
