He never acquired the fame of South Side colleagues such as saxophonists Von Freeman and Fred Anderson. And even as recent as 2007, at 77 years of age, he has yet to release a recording as bandleader. But anyone who has heard the great Jimmy Ellis take flight on alto saxophone knows that he ranks among this city's most imposing jazz artists.
