JICC Film Series Presents:
“Kamikaze Girls”
Directed by Tetsuya Nakashima
Showing at the Japan Information and Culture Center
Thursday, February 22, 2007 @ 6:30 P.M.
Kamikaze Girls tells the tales of two very different girls and their lives in
the small town of Shimotsuma in the Ibaraki prefecture of Japan, an hour
northwest of Tokyo. Momoko is the spoiled daughter of a small time Yakuza
member who sells counterfeit clothes. She dresses in the Lolita fashion and is
always trying to find new ways to finance her expensive taste. Ichigo is the
tomboy head of a local motorcycle gang. After Momoko is forced to move away
from posh Kobe, the pair become unlikely friends in their small town. It
features j-pop stars Kyoko Fukada and Anna Tsuchiya as Momoko and Ichigo.
The movie borrows generously from manga and anime and features a memorable and
entertaining supporting cast. There are many surreal scenes, camera tricks and
special effects that make the film a wild ride into a side of Japanese youth
culture rarely seen overseas. See kamikazegirls.net for more information on the
film.
