A panel of rabbis, activists and scholars (with much crossover) will begin at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Barnes & Noble, 659 W. Diversey Pkwy., Chicago. Admission is free, and parking will be available next to the store.
Panelists Jane Ramsey, JCUA executive director; Rabbi Sidney Schwarz, founder and president of PANIM: The Institute for Jewish Leadership and Values ; and
Rabbi Capers C. Funnye, spiritual leader of Beth Shalom B'nai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation and a JCUA board member, will discuss such issues as:
Is the quest for social justice intrinsic to Judaism?
Do traditional Jewish texts contradict contemporary notions of justice?
Is the pursuit of social justice an alternate means of expressing one's Jewishness?
The session will be moderated by Hal M. Lewis, PhD, dean of continuing education and associate professor of contemporary Jewish studies at Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies.
