JEW TUBE: TV SITCOMS' JEWISH FAMILY PORTRAITS
Taught by David Perlstein
Tuesdays, October 13-November 10, 2009
7-8:45 pm
Jewish images in the "mirror" of television can tickle or torment us. Often they do both. Jew Tube focuses on the presentation and evolution of Jewish identity and Jewish issues during the 60-year history of situation comedies beginning with The Goldbergs (1949) on network TV and continuing on cable. Each class will feature an introduction to the evening's theme and viewing two episodes (without commercials) along with discussion.
* Oct. 13: The First Lonely Portrait (The Goldbergs)
* Oct. 20: Intermarriage (Bridget Loves Bernie, Mad About You)
* Oct. 27: Wacky Women (Rhoda, The Nanny)
* Nov. 3: Celebration of Jewishness (The Simpsons, Will and Grace)
* Nov. 10: Urban Hip and The Ultimate (?) Jewish Sitcom (Seinfeld)
Fee: $36 members, $48 nonmembers
