What would a dinner party hosted by Virginia Woolf and attended by Gertrude Stein, Thelonious Monk, Bobby Fischer, Salvador Dalí, Michael Jackson and others look like? Would they get along? Or would they burn the house down?
In a series of epic poem songs reminiscent of both Brian Eno and the jazz/poetry experiments of Kenneth Patchen, poet and McSweeney’s editor Jesse Nathan and composer Chris Janzen present and narrate this fantastical dinner party—wielding words, jazz, rock and roll, and electronica to conjure a fantastical, salon-like affair hosted by Woolf and populated by dead eccentrics. Throughout the performance, audience members are served various food items — taken directly from the narrative.
Presented in conjunction with the Museum’s current exhibition Seeing Gertrude Stein: Five Stories.
