JEM COHEN Screening and Q&A
Saturday 21 November 2009
At: Lighthouse, 28 Kensington Street, Brighton BN1 4AJ
Doors & Bar: 5:30pm
Screening: 6pm
Entry: £5 / £4 (concs)
New York-based filmmaker Jem Cohen is truly a unique voice. Straddling documentary, artists’ film and the essay or diary film yet resisting such neat categorisation, his work is at once lyrical and poetic, compassionate yet incisive, and, in the case of his street- and city-films, quietly angry at the casual abuses of liberty and power which have come to define the last decade, particularly in post-Giuliani New York.
Lighthouse will be screening a selection of Cohen’s seminal films as part of Brighton’s Film Festival, CINECITY 2009. The screening will be divided into two programmes entitled Invisible Cities (Italian City Portraits) and Street Songs (New York notebooks), and will end with a Q&A with Cohen hosted by writer Gareth Evans.
This tour is produced by AURORA* and will be screened at Lighthouse as part of CINECITY** 2009.
* AURORA 2009: Common Ground: AURORA is an annual festival in Norwich, UK which focuses on the moving image in the most diffuse sense. A uniquely multidisciplinary, progressive event, it fuses artist retrospectives and thematic film programmes with discussion events, live performance and installations, alongside the very best new work from across the world for space and screen. www.aurora.org.uk **
