Winner of the Camera dOr at the Cannes Film Festival, this lively and imaginative first feature by acclaimed Israeli authors Etgar Keret and Shira Geffen uses the sea as a motif interweaving the stories of three Tel Aviv women: Batya (Sarah Adler), a catering waitress who takes in a little girl (Nikol Leidman) apparently abandoned at the beach; Keren (Noa Knoller), a bride who breaks her leg at the wedding reception, ruining her Caribbean honeymoon; and Joy (Ma-nenita De Latorre), a non-Hebrew-speaking domestic worker who has regretfully left her son behind in her native Philippines. In vignettes that are both wryly comic and haunting, the filmmakers create an unusual mosaic of modern Israeli life through the eyes of three different women, who make their way through Israels most cosmopolitan city, struggling with issues of communication, affection and destiny. Writer: Shira Geffen. Directors: Etgar Keret, Shira Geffen. In Hebrew with English subtitles. (Israel/France 2007) 78 min.
