Singer/songwriter Jeffrey Gaines came onto the genre in the early '90s with sensitive lyrics about the inner conflicts of individuals. His self-titled debut in 1992 contained songs about neurosis, insecurity and depression, and his other two albums, 1994s 'Somewhat Slightly Dazed' and 1998s 'Galore,' cover similar subjects. A good comparison for Gaines would be the lyrics of Peter Gabriel without the lush, electronic instrumentation: Gaines plays with much simpler arrangements. His 1992 debut, despite its multi-instrumental sound, actually only featured Gaines and Garth Hudson (formerly of The Band) who played organ, saxophone and accordion.
