Jazz funerals in New Orleans are historically and primarily based on traditional African spiritual practices, as well as spiritual practices found in other cultures. At its essence, a jazz funeral acknowledges both the need to mourn and the need to celebrate the life of the deceased. On permanent display at the museum is jazz funeral memorabilia including the largest known video library of New Orleans jazz funerals spanning from 1980 to the present.
