Study big band repertoire and jazz standards arranged for flute ensemble (including Piccolo, C Flute, Alto Flute, and Bass Flute) and develop jazz rhythmic concepts, articulation, phrasing, intonation, tone quality and improvisation techniques within a large group setting. Participants should be familiar with all major and minor scales and be able to read music at a high school level.

The class sessions will focus on two main jazz compositional forms: the 12-bar blues and 32-bar forms. Participants will also be given the opportunity to learn by listening to jazz big band recordings of the music arranged for flute choir. Improvisation techniques will cover jazz rhythmic and melodic concepts as well as the relationship between jazz harmony and scale usage.
The final flute choir experience will be a recording session with a rhythm section (bass, drums, and piano) performing arrangements rehearsed throughout the four weeks, as well as a public performance on the last day of the course.
