Catherine Russell was hardly an overnight sensation. But following her 2006 debut recording Cat, she was suddenly headlining jazz festivals and opening for rock stars like Steely Dan and Paul Simon. Her road to recognition has roots as deep as the mix of jazz, blues, folk, and Americana that has made her a rising star. Inextricably linked to her ascension is the growing legend of her musical father, Luis Russell, who was Louis Armstrong’s musical director. In this concert, she honors both men by featuring jazz and Swing Era repertoire with a ten piece orchestra including guitarist Matt Munisteri, pianist Mark Shane, trumpeter Jon Erik-Kellso, trombonist John Allred, saxophonist/clarinetist Dan Block, saxophonist Andy Farber, bassist Lee Hudson, and drummer Mark McLean.
Free pre-concert music in the Atrium provided by Javier Nero.
