George's Nightclub is proud to introduce Jazz at George's! The series began Thursday January 5, 2012 and will happen every first and third Thursday of every month*! George's will present the best of local, national and international Jazz superstars and we expect the stage to be graced with surprise guest visits from renowned Bay Area Jazz players. George's invites musicians and fans of Jazz to come and participate in what promises to be an incredibly hot Thursday session!
This session will be fronted by the superb bassist and composer Marcus Shelby. Shelby has found a particular calling in jazz: commenting on events and themes in Afro-American history through the medium of the big band, not unlike the legendary Duke Ellington. His critically acclaimed jazz oratorios include Port Chicago, regarding segregated African-American soldiers, and Harriet Tubman, about the Underground Railroad. For this show -- Soul of the Movement: Meditations on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. -- Shelby and co. turn to the civil rights icon.
Marcus Shelby, well known as the leader of the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, is often called a "Renaissance musician," earning acclaim as a bandleader, bassist, composer and arranger. Now fronting Jazz at George's, the Marcus Shelby Quartet, featuring Howard Wiley (tenor sax), Matt Clark (piano) and Darrell Green (drums), brings together four of the fiercest bop players in the Bay Area.
