JARBOE
Former lead singer and keyboardist of the wrenching no-wave outfit Swans, Jarboe exorcises the the darkest corners of the psyche with her music. From grating doom metal to the dreamy psychedelic folk, from supernatural warbles to symphonic strains, Jarboe’s music is the soundtrack to post-mortem decay. Her vocal performance is unmatched, with range that rivals Bjork’s and with an emotional weight comparable to Morrissey’s.
IUD
Lizzi Bougatsos and Sadie Laska, of Gang Gang Dance and Growing respectively, are known as leaders in the sample-heavy and aggressively percussive brand of music that is rescuing the indie rock scene in New York. Together, they are IUD, a noise duo that incorporates experimental wizardry, open improvisation and a respect for the beat birthing a sound that defines the subterranean elements of the urban landscape. Their subject matter confronts sexuality in a frank manner that may induce squirming, all in the spirit of creating jarring sonic statements with a groove.
BLOODY PANDA
As sludgy and gory as their name would suggest, Bloody Panda’s music is a pounding march into despair. Yoshiko Ohara’s frontwork is tumultuous and indefatigably chilling. Tying cemetery samples with chainsaw guitars and pounding drums, their sound bridges the gap between metal and noise. Through their brief run they have collaborated with Wolf Eyes, Pig Destroyer, Soilent Green and Genghis Tron. Drummer Lev Weinstein also mans the kits for New York metal supergroup Krallice.
CULT OF YOUTH
Haunting, mysterious, and deeply infectious, this New York based post-industrial project has been turning out dark apocalyptic folk anthems for almost three years now. Following a pair of limited edition self-released records and the highly acclaimed LP on DAIS Records they have become increasingly known for their breathtaking live performances. Although rooted in the tradition of European bands such as Death In June, Forseti, Sol Invictus, or Current 93, Cult Of Youth have a unique and distinctly American sound that is a much needed breath of fresh air in the increasingly stagnant international neofolk community.
