Jane Austen & Personality Disorder
This talk examines a particular aspect of Jane Austen's genius. The speaker investigates how the portrayal of a character like Willoughby in Sense and Sensibility reflects Jane Austen's intuitive grasp of relationship dysfunction and the subtle manifestations of a fractured sense of self. It is surprising enough that Jane Austen is able to present this fictional case study a hundred years before the works of Freud and his contemporaries were available; the fact that during her lifetime she seldom had the opportunity to mix in intellectual circles where new interpretations of human behaviour might be exchanged makes her profound understanding of personality disorder even more remarkable. The speaker illustrates Jane Austen's ground-breaking focus on the dangerous threat to the well being of those - and it's most of us - who can fall for the charm of a charismatic impostor.
