Detroit saxophonist James Carter follows in the footsteps of Wynton Marsalis, relishing jazz's past, present and future over the course of just over ten recordings. Critics lauded his ability to play in virtually any jazz style without appearing to ape anyone. Carter played and toured with Marsalis in 1986 at the age of 17 and was a member of Lester Bowie's band upon relocating to New York in 1988. Carter's recordings under his own name explore many different focuses, from standards and electric funk to the Hot Club swing of Django Reinhardt and honoring the legendary Billie Holiday with his release 'Gardenias for Lady Day.'
