At 23, saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Jamaal Sawyer plays with a recognized maturity that belies his age. A newcomer to the New York jazz scene, Jamaal has performed with recognized heavyweights Bobby Watson and Barry Harris as well as unsung giants David Schnitter, Bill Saxton, and Valery Ponomarev. Jamaal began his musical education in Kansas City, where he spent three years under the tutelage of Mr. Watson at the University of Missouri. In 2003, he decided to make the move east to New York. There he completed his education, studying with a who's who of the jazz world including Gary Bartz, Greg Osby, and Greg Tardy. Having cut his teeth on the New York scene, Jamaal has performed in a variety of locales in NYC including Sweet Rhythm, Crash Mansion, the Garage, S.O.B.s and the Blue Note.
