This holiday season, Denver’s Victorian Playhouse, hailed by Westword as the “Best Resurrection of a Theatre” offers a defiantly funny alternative to a perennial Christmas story.

The cast includes Chris Kendall as Actor 1 (Jacob Marley and others), Christina Bakken as Actor 2 (The Bogle and others), Leroy Leonard as Actor 3 (E. Scrooge and others) and Charles Kohler as Actor 4 (The Record Keeper and others).

Written by award-winning actor and playwright Tom Mula as “story theatre” the cast speak both the dialogue and the narrative, performing the action as they describe it. “Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol” is a witty, richly-theatrical re-imagining of Dickens’ holiday classic told from the perspective of Scrooge’s curmudgeonly business partner.

Mula, who has performed Scrooge in over 400 performances of “A Christmas Carol” at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, wrote the play in response to a post-performance comment from a friend’s daughter who remarked that Jacob got “a raw deal”. The show was broadcast on PBS in 1998 and won the prestigious AFIM Indie Award from NPR.
