Composed by Dave Iwataki, J-Town/Bronzeville Suite explores a fascinating and seldom told chapter of Los Angeles' history. During World War II, as thousands of Japanese Americans were unconstitutionally incarcerated, hundreds of newly arrived African Americans migrated from the South to Little Tokyo, where they remained until the War's end. Known as "Bronzeville," the area became a community hub with clubs featuring some of the most recognizable names in jazz from John Coltrane to Miles Davis. This beautifully constructed piece features historical images and performances by some of the city's most respected traditional Japanese musicians and jazz instrumentalists. Co-sponsored by the Japanese American National Museum with funding from the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program.
