EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED AS YOUTH CHOIR FLIPS THE “SHUFFLE” SWITCH
Leaping seamlessly from Bach to Britten, from Monteverdi to Mozart, from Billy Joel to Aretha Franklin, the opening of Sydney Philharmonia Choirs’ 2009 season could be the concert equivalent of an MP3 player on “shuffle” mode.
Featuring the extraordinary talents of counter-tenor Tobias Cole, iVox will offer something for all music lovers, presenting an eclectic mix of great moments in vocal music at the City Recital Hall Angel Place on Thursday, 9 April at 7pm.
Sydney Philharmonia’s Artistic & Musical Director, Brett Weymark said audiences should expect some unusual juxtapositions, with the concert program taking inspiration from the current fad for music shuffling.
“People will pop in their headphones, at the gym, on the bus, and jump from classical to jazz to rock to dance – all in a matter of minutes,” said Weymark. “It’s a perfectly legitimate way of listening to music and it’s incredibly liberating from a concert programming point of view because not everything has to fit into a particular category or follow a certain formal structure.”
Joining Tobias Cole for iVox will be Sydney Philharmonia’s own contingent from “Generation I”, the youth choir VOX.
Comprising some of Australia’s best young singers between 16 to 26 years of age, VOX was formed in 2000 but will perform as part of Sydney Philharmonia’s main subscription series for the first time in 2009.
“They are really our next generation of choral singers and we felt this was the perfect time to expose them to a much wider audience, alongside one of Australia’s most successful counter-tenors, they make such an exciting sound” said Elizabeth Scott, VOX’s musical director and conductor.
