It Started in the Garage is a solo exhibit featuring the artwork of R.Grimes.
In this exhibit Grimes explores the early influences of his work. At a young age R.Grimes became involved in the punk rock/ hardcore music scene in South Florida. As far back as the late 1980’s R. Grimes would travel from the Florida Keys to go to punk/ hardcore shows on South Beach and the greater south Florida area. The first show being Social Distortion @ DECOS on South Beach where he was inadvertently initiated into the South Florida scene by getting crap kicked out of him by a group of skinheads. This did not deter the young Grimes. The shows he attended and the scene and all that came with it from the record covers, politics and friendships left a lasting impression on R. Grimes. An impression that is evident in his artwork. His graphic style of art is fused together by strong imagery and a do it your self work ethic he credits to his father and the punk rock community he became involved with at a young age. His first solo show exemplifies this.
The show will consist of screen prints on a variety of surfaces that use imagery as communication between his self and the viewer. On the night of the opening R.Grimes will perform live, screen printing limited T-shirts, thus demonstrating his commitment to his do-it-your self conviction.
