Internationally known weaver Isaac Vasquez Garcia from Teotitlan del Valle in Oaxaca, Mexico, will speak at Portland Community College as part of PCC's Art Beat annual spring celebration of the arts week.
Vasquez Garcia, who owns and runs Bug In the Rug design/weaving studio and gallery in Oaxaca, will present a slide lecture on his weaving and spinning wool skills in the Rock Creek Event Center (Building 9). He will discuss natural color dyeing (including the use of indigenous bugs to create certain colors), designing with traditional Zapotec motifs, and the making of carpets and tapestries. Mexican painter Rufino Tamayo, with whom he worked with for more than 20 years, influences Vasquez Garcia’s work.
Vaquez Garcia will speak at PCC with his son. Their slide show and lecture will be in Spanish with English interpretation.
