Is There Freedom After Hip-Hop?: A Panel Discussion on Hip Hop Aesthetics April 17, 2007

With the recent release of Jeff Chang’s Total Chaos: The Art and Aesthetics of Hip-Hop and the growing number of hip-hop courses on college campuses across the country, the aesthetics of a movement that has influenced multiple generations on an international scale is on view. What is the relevance of hip-hop in the 21st century? What are hip-hop aesthetics? How will they set the course for the movement in the future? Join author/journalist Jeff Chang, Marcyliena Morgan, executive director of Stanford University’s Hip-Hop Archive; and Total Chaos contributors journalist Raquel Cepeda; “lit-hop” author Adam Mansbach; and poet Joel Tan in a conversation that breaks apart hip-hop aesthetics and dares to raise the question: Is there freedom after hip-hop? This panel is moderated by Weyland Southon of Hard Knock Radio (94.1 FM KPFA) and is produced as part of the Total Chaos Hip-Hop Forum Series (www.totalchaoshiphop.com/tc) and in conjunction with the Hip-Hop Theater Festival (www.hiphoptheaterfest.org).
