The Irish Chamber Orchestra, resident ensemble at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick, earns accolades for the freshness and vibrancy of its music-making. American virtuoso Leon Fleisher joins the orchestra as soloist for Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in B-flat Major (for the left hand), a work commissioned by the one-armed pianist Paul Wittgenstein. Fleisher recorded the concerto with the Boston Symphony in 1991. Conducted by Gérard Korsten, music director of the London Mozart Players, the orchestra also performs Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Thamos, King of Egypt; contemporary Irish composer Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin’s Anything Can Happen; and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A Major. The orchestra’s performance is part of the Imagine Ireland/A Year of Irish Arts in America 2011 tour.
