Nationally acclaimed speaker Timothy Pinnick, author of the definitive book on African- American newspaper research, will share valuable gems to help genealogists, amateur historians and scholars uncover vital details from across the United States. He has extensive lecture experience on a variety of topics and has been a presenter at over a dozen national and regional genealogy conferences coast to coast. His awards include a 2005-2006 Formby Research Fellowship and a 2005 Richard S. Brownlee Fund grant to conduct research on African American coal miners in Texas and Missouri.
Tim will speak on a variety of topics, including: “The WWI Draft Card: Don’t Do Research Without It!”, “Coal Dust in Your Veins: Tips, Strategies and Resources to Bring Your Coal Mining Ancestors to the Surface”, “Locating and Using Oral History Collections, Developing the Genealogy of a Community: A Case Study”, and “Strikebreakers! The Recruitment and Employment of African Americans in the Coal Mining Industry 1870-1900.”
Friday seminar topics by Mary Burtzloff, Archivist, National Archives-Central Plains Region:
“U.S. Military Records” and “Using the National Archives Website.”

The IGS has added over 1,000 new volumes to its library in the past year. The IGS Library will be available on Friday evening from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for conference participants to explore this excellent research collection. A light meal will be served at the library. We ask conference attendees to please RSVP to take advantage of this special evening.
