There are fairies at the bottom of the golf course…
When you’re a fairy from the waist up, but your legs are mortal, life is bound to be complicated. For young Strephon, a devastatingly handsome young shepherd, this is his curse – an upper half that is immortal and a ‘lower half that grows older every day and some day or other must die of old age.’ But that’s the least of his problems. What happens when your girlfriend catches you embracing your fairy mother, who looks no older than seventeen? Tantrums are inevitable – and are probably quite fair and reasonable. And with half the house of Peers already standing between him and his love, Strephon has a lot of explaining to do. Still, it pays to have a furious Fairy Queen on your side!
Iolanthe is a beautifully crafted story of love, self-sacrifice and bucking the system – as half-fairy meets girl and Gilbertian complications conspire to keep them apart.
Award-winning director and designer David Lampard promises a captivating, intimate and playful production that focuses on the touching family story at the heart of Gilbert’s libretto. Musical Director Ian Andrew will channel the highs and lows of Sullivan’s charming and heart-breaking score, with both belly laughs and tears guaranteed.
Magic and mayhem will happen – in equal measure.
Iolanthe! From thy dark exile thou art summoned…
