This Course will cover the fundamental aspects of Chinese Painting. It will systematically introduce the students to its special implements, namely the brushes, the paper and the ink/color. Through a series of motifs, the students will learn a variety of brush techniques, and integrate them with the use of the “rice paper”, with its absorbent characteristic. Initial practice will be focused attention on brush stroke. The motifs will be flowers, fruit, vegetables, birds, fish, animals, figure and landscape. For each motif, the main goal in terms of brush technique is emphasized. The various techniques are then integrated in the practice of landscape. In each class period, a brief discussion of Chinese aesthetics and appreciation of famous paintings will be included. The objective for the course is to provide the basic elements for Chinese brush painting, and builds the foundation for the creation of atmospheric paintings.
