Knowing your business’s worth smooths the merger and acquisition process, an IRCE speaker says.
Unlocking the secrets of company valuation
Three times a week until the conference, our editors will put together a short article spotlighting one of the speakers featured at the Internet Retailer Conference & Exhibition 2011 that contains a description of the session, an explanation of why they selected that speaker for that session, and a brief interview with the speaker about their session. Today's IRCE Spotlight Speaker is Glen Kayll.
Being acquired under favorable terms by a larger concern is one measure of success in the aspirations of many owners of start-up and smaller e-commerce companies. But faced with the demands of running their business, many entrepreneurs simply haven’t had the time to look into how to measure their business's worth when potential opportunity knocks. Online vision products retailer Coastal Contacts Inc. has acquired a number of companies over the past several years on its way to annual sales of more than $140 million and Glen Kayll, chief financial officer, will discuss what companies need to know about the valuation process in a session at the Internet Retailer Conference & Exhibition in San Diego.
In the session, called “How much is my business worth?,” to be co-presented with Jonathan Thralow, Partner, Tycoons Private Equity Fund, Kayll will review the elements of company valuation. Should value be based on a multiple of earnings? A multiple of sales? And what should that multiple be? This session will walk attendees in detail through how to determine the value of their companies, looking not just at past accomplishments, such as profitability, but also at future potential, position in the market and other factors.
“I’ll discuss the key considerations buyers think about when considering an acquisition and associated pricing,” Kayll says. “I’ll also walk through some suggested preparation to make the deal process smoother.”
The session will also guide online retailers in identifying, verifying and hiring brokers, investment bankers and others who can help them evaluate their businesses.
Internet Retailer’s editors asked Kayll to speak because of his long experience in corporate financial management focused on mergers and acquisitions. At Coastal Contacts he provides leadership in international finance, negotiation, mergers and acquisitions. Previously, he was treasurer of PMC-Sierra Inc., a global semiconductor manufacture, where he was integral to PMC-Sierra's public and private investment, corporate finance, investor relations and merger and acquisition efforts.
