About IENE
IENE (Infra Eco Network Europe)is an initiative for creating a transport infrastructure that harmonizes with the surrounding landscape. In 2008, IENE was re-vitalized after some years and is currently establishing its network across Europe.
The general goal of IENE is to promote a safe and sustainable pan-European transport infrastructure through recommending measures and planning procedures to conserve biodiversity, counteract landscape fragmentation, and reduce vehicular accidents and wildlife casualties. Some areas of focus are:
IENE international conferences on ecology and transportation provide a recurring interdisciplinary forum for the exchange of current research, knowledge and practical experience between the sectors of environment and transport, between scientists and practitioners, in Europe and worldwide.
IENE 2010 International Conference
There is an urge to improve and ensure connectivity across European landscapes, given the rapid development of road infrastructure especially in the eastern European countries, increasing urbanisation, and an overarching climate threat.
Yet, there are also opportunities to integrate infrastructure and ecology thanks to concurrent achievements in European environmental policy and the growing public awareness of habitat fragmentation. Using policy objectives and a public dialogue as basis for developing interdisciplinary and target-oriented approaches to planning, construction, maintenance and monitoring procedures, we will hopefully accomplish a change in transport sector towards a greater environmental sustainability.
IENE invites scientists and engineers, planners and stake holders, authorities as well as private companies to discuss and develop the solutions for a better future.
