Acclaimed pianist Barry Douglas comes to the Lakewood Cultural Center to celebrate Chopin’s and Schumann's 200th anniversaries at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 23. Hailed as “a supremely talented and genuine artist,”Douglas is one of the most versatile and brilliant pianists of today. Active as an orchestral soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, conductor and festival director, Douglas has been praised by critics and audiences worldwide for his artistry. Douglas’ Lakewood recital program will include John Field’s Nocturne No. 1 in E-flat major and Nocturne No. 5 in B-flat major, Robert Schumann’s Sonata in F-sharp minor and Frederic Chopin’s Polonaise No. 4 in C minor Op 40 No. 2,Nocturne No. 16 in E- flat Op 55 No. 2 and Sonata No. 3 in B minor.
A native of Ireland, Douglas studied at the Belfast School of Music and established a major international career upon winning the Gold Medal at the 1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. He has since appeared as a soloist with many of the world’s foremost orchestras and has collaborated with several eminent conductors. Highlights of his 2010-2011 season as a soloist include his return to the London Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony, Singapore Symphony, Duisburg Philharmonic, RSP Berlin and Ulster Orchestra among others.
Sought after as a chamber musician, Douglas has shared the stage with numerous acclaimed artists,such as Cho-Liang Lin; Lynn Harrell; Gary Hoffmann; Andres Diaz; and the Tokyo, Ysaye and Guarneri string quartets.
In 1999, Douglas formed Camerata Ireland, an all-Irish chamber orchestra with players from both Northern and southern Ireland to celebrate “the wealth of Irish musical talent.” With Douglas at the keyboard and under his direction, Camerata Ireland performed at the Lakewood Cultural Center in fall 2001 to critical acclaim.
