Ages: 12 years and up
Each workshop will introduce a specific style or genre of music and explore the rhythm section’s role within the ensemble. The first hour will include directed listening, discussion and demonstrations. The second hour will provide participants the opportunity to play, listen and observe.
Register for all four and receive a discount on class fees. These workshops are open to anyone, no matter their experience, ages 12+.
June 27: Jazz through the 1950s: discover the origins of the standard jazz rhythm section from Dixieland/early jazz and standard 4/4 swing to bebop and the Cool School. Faculty includes Mark Flugge (piano), Larry Cook (bass) and Jim Rupp (drum set).
July 11: Jazz in the Modern Age: explore current jazz styles such as free, modal, soul and fusion jazz, including Latin jazz styles such as bossa nova and jazz samba. Faculty includes Erik Augis (piano), Larry Cook (bass) and Guy Remonko (drum set).
July 17: Pop, Rock & Funk: trace the history of the rock rhythm section, beginning with early R&B, early rock, and the Beatles, moving through funk and rock of the 70s and 80s, and examining great modern rhythm sections such as The Roots and Jamiroquai. Faculty includes Dave DeWitt (piano), Larry Cook (bass) and Reggie Jackson (drum set).
August 8: Latin (Puerto Rico, Cuba and Costa Rica): explore tumbao and montuno, salsa, mambo, cha cha cha and merengue. Faculty includes Tony Bonardi (piano), Larry Cook (bass) and Eric Paton (percussion).
