Inside the Met: The Curatorial Departments
The Robert Lehman Collection
Laurence B. Kanter, Lionel Goldfrank III Curator of Early European Art, Yale University Art Gallery, and was Curator of the Robert Lehman Collection for eighteen years
Dita Amory, Associate Curator in Charge
The Robert Lehman Collection, established as a curatorial department in 1975 following the completion of the Robert Lehman Wing, represents one of the most extraordinary private collections ever assembled in the United States. Presented to the Metropolitan Museum by the Robert Lehman Foundation following Mr. Lehman’s death in 1969, the collection of nearly 3,000 works of art is exceptional not only for the quality of its best and most famous works of art but also for the breadth and depth of its holdings. Paintings of the early Italian Renaissance, European drawings tracing five centuries of draftsmanship, Italian majolica and glass, medieval bronze sculpture, manuscript illuminations, and a significant collection of frames are highlights of this magnificent collection, which was assembled by Robert Lehman and his father, Philip. Dita Amory and Laurence B. Kanter will introduce audiences to the Lehman family and their townhouse on West 54th Street, re-creating—through a tour of many of its lesser known as well as most popular masterpieces—the taste and ambience of this unique home and its art collections set in rich decorative displays with wall fabrics and furniture.
