One of the youngest curatorial departments in the Museum, the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas first became visible when the Michael C. Rockefeller Wing opened in early 1982. The foundation of the department’s holdings was the collection of Nelson Rockefeller, Michael’s father, who had a longtime interest in the art of these regions. And in the years that followed, the department’s collections have grown in all respects. Julie Jones talks about the initial Rockefeller bequest, Alisa LaGamma discusses the development of the African collection, and Eric Kjellgren gives an overview of the recent reinstallation of the Oceanic Galleries. Virginia Lee Webb reviews the focused special exhibitions organized by the department’s staff.
