NEW YORK, NY (April 21) – Lolita Bar and Emerging Arts present Infinite Bliss, an exhibition of six oil paintings by Anne-Françoise Potterat, on display during the bar’s regular hours through June 24th. On Tuesday, May 8th, there will be an opening reception featuring the artist and DJ Maxx Klaxon (klaxon.tv) from 6-8pm. Lolita (lolitabar.net) is located at 266 Broome Street between Allen and Orchard on the Lower East Side (Subway: F to Delancey).

Anne-Françoise Potterat works in a unique and innovative painting style inspired by life and lexicography in her native Lausanne, Switzerland, as well as her experiences in the United States and Iran. Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions at Dietz Gallery, Richart, David Krut Projects, Baron/Boisante Editions, Debs & Co., The Drawing Center, and elsewhere in New York and in Europe. Her work has been praised and cited in publications including The New York Times, New York Magazine, The Village Voice, The L Magazine, Ginza (Tokyo), and 24 Heures (Lausanne). Potterat holds degrees in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts and Biochemistry from Barnard College. She lives in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn.

Using abstract symbolism to unmask the semantic meaning of words and reveal their true lyrical beauty as ciphers in an era characterized by a 24/7 deluge of often random, useless data, Potterat is as much a poet as a painter. She reflects, “The paintings express my fascination for children and their blissful innocence and infinite imagination. While creating this work, I was enamored by Persian and Indian miniatures, decorative patterns, the sense of infinity created by mosaics on the walls of mosques, arabic calligraphy, and, of course, words. The intention of my work (now and always) is to point to the magical and mysterious dimension of who we are.”

Acclaimed as “a vintage-furnished bar with a shining reputation for not having one,” Lolita is located on the edge of the Lower East Side, a bit off the beaten path but definitely worth the trip. Regularly featuring the work of established and emerging artists and hosting frequent literary, comedy and other events, Lolita has emerged as a dependable cultural touchstone. Low-key ambiance and happy hour specials draw both neighborhood regulars and assorted creative types.

Emerging Arts (established in 2002) is a New York-based nonprofit cultural group dedicated to promoting the work of emerging artists active in both established and emerging mediums including painting, photography, music, dance, theater, film, multimedia and digital video.
