A Festival of Fresh International Films
Celebrating independent work and creativity, Indie Gems returns to Sydney’s West for its third consecutive year and seeks to highlight and showcase burgeoning filmmakers from Western Sydney. Presenting a weekend of diverse and exciting screenings, informative workshop and film events, the Indie Gems festival runs from Thursday 26 to Sunday 29 July at Riverside Theatres.
Filmmakers attending Indie Gems have the opportunity to hear from leading industry professionals, who specialise in new methods of film distribution and marketing. An Awards night will also be held over the weekend with a special award for Mentor of the Year being given.
Indie Gems opens on Thursday 26 July with an exclusive screening of diverse short films. The program includes a sneak peak at the new web series Deadheart by Kristy Best; Sintel directed by Colin Levy; Facebook Screwed My Life by David Choi, Walk Tall, Stand Strong directed by Dean Daley Jones and award winning web-series SYD 2030 directed by Alex Barnett & Tatjana Marjanovic. The screenings are followed by a fun networking event.
Friday evening kicks off with a screening of the moving Polish documentary, presented in association with Kresy-Siberia, The Officer’s Wife and follows an American man who discovers the haunting story of his grandmother’s survival after she was deported to Siberia during World War Two. Scheduled after this is the hit of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, 10 Terrorists, where an outrageous LA producer sets out to make the most extreme and controversial reality show ever – Who Want to be a Terrorist?
On Saturday afternoon see Bathing Franky, featuring exceptional performances by Aussie acting legend Henry Szeps and the ever-brilliant Maria Venuti. Saturday night hosts the Australian premiere of Martyn Park’s Isolate, for which Jacinta John recently picked up the gong for Best Actress at the Los Angeles Fear and Fantasy Film Festival.
Closing Night takes place on Sunday 29th July, where we award the inaugural Mentor of the Year Award, which recognises the support and hard work of those people who help aspiring filmmakers up the ladder. Applications for nominees are still open via www.titanview.com
