When done well, migrating an existing software development lifecycle to implement lean principles can deliver huge increases in productivity and delight customers by the refreshing consistent release of new feature rich software. When done badly, changes to any development process mid flow can result in confusion; frustrated customers and a grinding halt to productivity.
Lean thinking equips an organisation with a set of foundation principles focused on maximising customer value and efficiencies in productivity. To realize these principles within the software development lifecycle we require proven concrete practices that make these principles a reality.
This presentation explores the topic of making lean implementation a success, with case study examples demonstrating where existing processes have been migrated to Scrum and XP. The intended audience ranges from those working in an environment with no agile practices at all, to those who have seen some success from agile practices and are looking to gain increased productivity by further implementation of agile techniques.
We start with an introduction to Lean principles then draw a comparison between these and the practices of Scrum and XP. We then explore how these three methodologies support one another to combine as a cohesive whole to raise the ‘metabolism’ of the development process. Following this introduction the presentation walks through the various aspects of a software development lifecycle. We consider how to apply Scrum and XP practices to maximise value, minimise waste and realize lean ambitions.
This part of the presentation draws on real world experiences and describes examples that have resulted in successful project delivery through the application of lean principles and agile development practices.
