As part of National Climate Week and as an international meeting of the Mistra-Urban Futures project, the Greater Manchester Local Interaction Platform is organising a panel debate on Thursday 15th March between 1730 and 1930 at the CUBE Building, Portland Street, Manchester, M1 6DW.
The panel debate will examine the challenges, contexts and conditions in Greater Manchester necessary to create a sustainable city-region. In particular, the panel debate will ask:
What are the contemporary challenges in sustainable urban development in the city-region?
What are the implications of the financial crisis, localism agenda and coalition politics for sustainable urban development in Greater Manchester?
How well are contemporary challenges being addressed and what needs to be done?
The panel and audience will include representations from policy, third sector, business, academic and community sectors, along with members of the Mistra - Urban Futures centre from Sweden, Kenya and South Africa. It will be based on a series of short statements, guided debate and questions from the floor.
The panel comprises:
Mark Atherton, Director of Environment and Energy, Northwest Regional Development Agency
Steve Connor, Chair of Steering Group for Manchester: A Certain Future and CEO of Creative Concern
Lucy Danger, Executive Director, Emerge 3Rs
Walter Menzies, Independent Advisor on Sustainable Development
