The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum is pleased to present a lecture and book signing featuring Murray Lee’s book, In Search of Gold Mountain: A History of the Chinese in San Diego, California.

No one knows San Diego’s Chinese community like Curator of Chinese American History Murray Lee. His new book provides a comprehensive look at the history of the Chinese in San Diego: It begins with the earliest fishermen to settle on San Diego Bay, covers the emergence of Chinatown amidst the brothels and saloons of downtown’s Stingaree district, explores the sacrifices and contributions made during World War II, examines the decline of Chinatown after the war, and discusses the persistence of community organizations and holiday celebrations that still unite a dispersed community. Historic photographs and original research fill this 352-page tome that carefully traces the untold story of how one community of Chinese immigrants became Chinese Americans.

Murray K. Lee has been a curator at the museum since it opened in 1996, has written extensively on the Chinese in San Diego, has served on the museum board of directors, and has presented papers at numerous national conferences. He holds a B.A. and M.A. from George Washington University and has extensive professional experience in geographic and cartographic research, graphic design, and production of multi-media maps, atlases, publications, and exhibits.

The lecture and book signing will be held in the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Extension building at 328 J Street on Sunday, March 6th from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Refreshments will be served at the reception held in the Chinese garden at 404 Third Avenue. Admission is $2 and free for members and children under 12.
