IN KOVACSLAND: A TRIBUTE TO ERNIE KOVACS, 1951-1962, Shout! Factory, 90 min. Ernie Kovacs (1919-1962) was one of the first broadcasters to explore the vast possibilities of video, initially on local TV in Philadelphia (his morning show “Three to Get Ready” was the inspiration for “The Today Show”) and, later, on network prime time programs for NBC and ABC. In these freewheeling shows, surreal camera tricks, pranks with the crew and such loopy characters as Wolfgang Von Sauerbraten, Percy Dovetonsils and the immortal Nairobi Trio were all fair game. Join us for an evening of highlights from the work of television’s mad genius, followed by a panel of famed funny men and women discussing the wide influence of Kovacs’ comedy. [DVD]Discussion following with Harry Shearer, Carl Reiner, Merrill Markoe, George Schlatter, Jolene Brand Schlatter, Bob Odenkirk and Ben Model.
