Dr Hiba Mohamed is based at the Institute of Endemic Diseases in Sudan. Dr Mohamed was awarded the Royal Society Pfizer Award in 2007 for her pioneering research into genetic susceptibility to leishmaniasis, a parasitic disease transmitted by sand fly bites. Her discoveries have increased the understanding of how the disease develops in humans and may help to design therapies which will stimulate the immunes system to develop deference’s against the disease. Dr Mohamed is discussing her career, her research and work in Africa.
This event will be chaired by Sir Magdi Yacoub FRS. Sir Magdi was born in Egypt and studied at Cairo University and qualified as a doctor in 1957. He is currently Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Imperial College London. Sir Magdi is closely involved with the Royal Society’s International Policy Work in Africa. He is also the Founder & President of Chain of Hope which exists to provide African children suffering from life-threatening disease with the treatment to which they do not have access too.
