Come hear Ray Rickman outline his groundbreaking research on William J. Brown and his family background. Brown was born in Providence in 1814 to a free family of color, but his grandfather came to Rhode Island on a slave ship owned by the famous Brown brothers. It is a rare historical experience to track an African American family back to Africa, but Rickman has traced the William J. Brown family back to its 1664 African roots.
