Robert P. Emlen, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of American Civilization and curator at Brown University, studies issues of historical representations of place. One such place includes the burial grounds of 18th and 19th century America. Emlen will discuss how we can understand local history by studying the gravestones around us as primary documents. Special attention will be given to slaves' gravestones and cemeteries in Providence.
