I Am America juxtaposes the poetry of Allen Ginsberg, traditional songs from the south of the United States, and original compositions of the Open Program. Actors of the Open Program transform the poetic word into living action. The performance ranges from the raucous to the subtle and is constantly and undeniably infectious.
In this bold and energetic examination of America, she is a goddess with many faces, a mother with many children. I Am America is a dialogue: her children ask for answers and America tells her story. Her children respond: they have suffered, they desire, they fight and fail. They ask of her and themselves, what are they here to do? Each one calls out, each one recoginizes in the other their common origin. We are all America.

André Gregory writes: "I have not been able to get this beautiful work out of my head. The work is original, unique, passionate and filled with life. With the exception of Peter Brook's work, it's the only work I've truly loved in the last thirty years."
