This 'Seagull' has been staged with its specific environment in mind. "With the Hudson River at sunset as backdrop, the natural forest embraces a decaying stone facade creating the famed country estate," director Tom Demenkoff said. The production, while emphasizing Chekhov's concerns of art, economy and love, features music on violin and electric guitar and a few other site-specific surprises, including the theatrical use of puppets. The performance takes place at the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in Riverside Park near W. 89th St. and Riverside Dr. The audience is invited to sit on the stone steps leading up to the monument, with the north portico as the primary playing area (though actors may appear elsewhere on the site). Performances will be canceled in the event of rain.
